Hitting the Big BUCKs: Why is BUCK on the Higher End of the Price Range?

Updated: Dec 15, 2021

Here's the low-down on our pricing

Over the last year, we’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response to our gluten-free, allergen-friendly plant-based milk and ice cream products. We are thrilled and honoured to have been a welcome new addition to the vastly growing family of dairy alternatives available. Recently, we’ve noticed some curiosity around why we charge what we do, and rather than beat around the bush, we’re here to be open and fully transparent with our fans.

Ingredients with Integrity

When BUCK Founder, Peter Yupangco first sprouted the idea of creating a healthful, socially-conscious milk substitution, his two children were the primary focus. The same unwavering commitment he has for providing his own family with quality nutrition has carried over into each step of the BUCK recipe development process, and much time was spent thoughtfully handpicking ingredients for their nutritional and environmental benefits while doing away with unnecessary fillers and processing. Buckwheat, for several reasons, was selected as the star-ingredient. Its impressive nutritional profile of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids coupled with its ability to cater to those suffering with nut and gluten allergies made it a no-brainer. Supporting Local Farmers

Buckwheat has historically been an integral part of Canadian farming. Over time, countries overseas started playing in this arena and pricing North American farmers out of the market. Part of our decision to craft buckwheat-based products was rooted in protecting the livelihoods of our domestic farmers while helping to put Canada back on the map as a top international buckwheat exporter. While utilizing buckwheat from other countries would be a major cost-saving option, it isn’t one that is ethically aligned with our founding principles.

We Put Our Money Where Our Mouth Is

Our business is only as strong as the people behind it. We take our duty to caring for our employees to heart and ensure our compensation reflects that. This way, our team is able to live out comfortable, fulfilled lives and spread goodness in the community.

Sustainable Practices

We have a deep love and appreciation for the land on which we work and play. Everything we do, from our commitment to reducing food waste, to the packaging we use to seal our products, has been sourced consciously to support the well-being of Mother Earth. The paperboard we use for our food and beverages has been sourced sustainably through companies that are aligned with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). This ensures that the materials we use are made using forest-based materials from FSC-certified forests or reclaimed sources. Our BUCK mylk and plant-based ice cream products are packaged using recyclable paperboard.

In short, our price is high because we care. We care about the nutrition we provide for our families. We care about the livelihood of the farmers in our own communities. We care for and respect the land on which we work and play. Each decision we make is rooted in spreading goodness. We’re here to beat the status quo with products, practices, and people who are a testament to the greatness we wish to foster in our communities and beyond.
